Portrait Grid

I've seen this "portrait grid" layout all over the place ? especially when it's an article profiling a photographer's portfolio or something like that. Thought I'd give it a try myself with the gracious help of my friend Julianna, another photographer, who willingly took on several fun poses for me.

Pinhole Camera

Back in the film era, pinhole cameras were at times quite popular. The didn't have any glass in the lens, just a pin prick to let light in and expose the film. Because the aperture was so small, there wasn't any sense of depth-of-field with the photos because everything was in focus provided that the hole was the appropriate distance from the film.
In theory, the concept should be quite transferable to digital photography. After all, the sensor in a DSLR functions just like the film in a camera so by making a tiny hole in the body cap (the protective cap you put on the camera when there is no lens attached), the camera should be able to resolve an image. I tried it out and got it to sort of work. The photos are out of focus because the distance from the sensor to the hole isn't quite right, but with some refining, I should be able to create a way to take some really cool photos. <a href="a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sgbrooks/sets/72157626563563028/">Here's a few up on a Flickr gallery (click here) as sort of a "proof of concept."

Point-and-Shoot Love

Despite the date, this post has nothing to do with Valentines' Day, except that I love my new camera! Recently I picked up a Canon S95 — the point-and-shoot camera that really packs a punch! I've often lamented that, while I adore my E3, it can be a tad large to carry around with me for say a night out with friends or just casually street shooting. Props to Canon for coming up with a compact camera truly designed for photographers. It has a great sensor that's powerful in low light, RAW image formatting, and can be set to a full manual mode so I can intuitively set up photos the way I'm used to with a DSLR. I've posted a few shots on Flickr from a concert on Saturday night.

New Website (null)

So my planned website design change is in place and I think it looks pretty snazzy. Of course, eventually I plan to reorganize the galleries and stuff (right now it's all the same content as before, just presented differently) but I think so far it's rather successful.

So I'm currently working on a bit of a redesign for the website that will allow me to post updates more easily (and will also include an RSS feed and fun gizmos like that).brbrIn the mean time, there's been a couple cool concerts lately now up on the gallery page. Check out a href=gallery/wintersleepWintersleep/a at the Starlite Room and a href=gallery/bigsugarBig Sugar/a at Grey Cup Festival!/p

Over the course of the summer I have been doing quite a bit of photography in any and evey bit of spare time that I have. I've made a few updates here and there to my a href=gallery/index.htmportfolio galleries/a as well as have added an a href=http://sgbrooks.ca/gallery/dianaandjasonengagement shoot/a to the lot. However, the majority of my summer photography can be seen on my a href=http://www.flickr.com/sgbrooksFlickr page. /a
